The Deep Soul of Nomadism
Avoid the over-touristed zones and truly stay with a herder family. Led by an expert guide, ride Mongolian horses into the quietest reaches of the grasslands and feel the land’s original stillness.
Cross the profound stillness of the nomadic heartland, follow the thousand-year legacy of Genghis Khan, and finally descend into a cliffside village in the Yellow River gorge.
A five-day arc from the nomadic heartland to the sea of sand, Ordos, Genghis Khan culture and the Yellow River ancient village.
From the ultra-quiet grasslands of the nomadic heartland to blue-hour campfires deep in the sea of sand, and onward to a cliffside village in the Yellow River gorge, this is a northern private route defined by civilizational depth, dramatic landscapes, and a high level of comfort.
The highlights are kept compact so the route’s narrative feels refined rather than visually heavy.
Avoid the over-touristed zones and truly stay with a herder family. Led by an expert guide, ride Mongolian horses into the quietest reaches of the grasslands and feel the land’s original stillness.
Deep in the desert after the day’s visitors have gone, enjoy an intimate evening of sunset, campfire, and the Milky Way, while facing the raw wilderness from the comfort of climate-controlled modern facilities.
Walk into the Mausoleum of Genghis Khan and hear, in person, the Darhad guardians tell the story of the eternal lamp that has burned for eight centuries, touching the spiritual homeland of the grassland empire.
Arrive at Laoniuwan and stay in a cliffside yaodong courtyard at one of northern China’s most dramatic landmarks, watching the mighty Yellow River curve beneath your feet.
The itinerary naturally forms a complete narrative arc from nomadic civilization (grasslands / empire) to agrarian civilization (Yellow River / ancient village), creating remarkable cultural depth.

100% flexible customization: This journey is a mature VIP framework. We recommend speaking in depth with your travel advisor before departure so that, based on your interests, preferences, and personal rhythm, we can further refine the route and hotel style.
Stress-free wilderness experience: The intensity of outdoor activities such as grassland riding and desert hiking will be tailored entirely to your physical condition, and even beginners can join with confidence.
Candid photography service: Our optional visual documentation is designed to be light and natural, capturing the truest travel moments without turning the entire journey into an exhausting series of posed shots.
Weather and itinerary support: Wilderness travel is influenced by natural conditions. To ensure both safety and the highest level of comfort, your guide may fine-tune the order of visits or certain outdoor activities—such as camp dinners or campfires—according to conditions like wind, sand, or rain. We will do our best to preserve the core experiences (please note that complimentary items that cannot be arranged due to force majeure are non-refundable and cannot be exchanged for cash).
Day-to-night temperature swings in Inner Mongolia are significant and UV exposure in the wilderness is strong, so please prepare windproof warm layers using a smart layering system and practice rigorous sun protection.
Please carry your original passport with you, as it is required for hotel check-in.
Although all accommodations meet a luxury standard, infrastructure along remote roads—such as public restrooms—can still be relatively basic, so please keep realistic expectations for an authentic wilderness journey.
Where is Inner Mongolia? Is it the same as Mongolia?
Inner Mongolia lies in northern China and borders Mongolia. Both belong to the Mongolian Plateau and both retain Mongolian grassland culture and nomadic traditions. For travelers, Inner Mongolia is easier to access and makes a more practical starting point for experiencing the grasslands, the desert, and nomadic culture.
Which city should I fly into?
We recommend arriving in and departing from Hohhot for this route.
If I go to Beijing first, is it easy to continue on to Hohhot?
Yes. The high-speed train from Beijing to Hohhot usually takes around two hours, and there are also direct flights from major Chinese cities such as Shanghai and Guangzhou.
What season is this journey best for?
Spring, summer, and autumn all work well. From March to May the grasslands turn green and the air is crisp; June to August is the most classic and comfortable season; from September to November the autumn colors are even more beautiful, and the Yellow River gorge and ancient village feel quieter. Winter has its own snow-filled beauty, but it is much colder overall.
Do I need horseback riding experience?
No. Basic instruction and time to get familiar with the horses will be arranged before departure, and the intensity of the riding can be adjusted flexibly according to each guest.
Will this trip be too tiring?
The journey is rich in content but deliberately unhurried. Horseback riding on the grasslands, desert activities, and time in the Yellow River village can all be adjusted according to your energy level and interests, making it well suited to travelers who want real nature without an overpacked schedule.
What are the grassland yurts like?
On the grassland segment, you stay in a luxury yurt for two guests with a private bathroom. The point is to truly give the night back to the grassland and the stars while still ensuring a comfortable stay.
Will the desert accommodation feel too basic?
No. In June, July, and August, you stay in a high-end tent deep in the desert, around 45 square meters, with air-conditioning and a private bathroom. In other months, accommodation is in a desert resort hotel. Overall comfort is significantly higher than at an ordinary camping site.
What makes this 5-day version especially distinctive?
It naturally brings together four of northern China’s most iconic images—grasslands, desert, Genghis Khan, and the Yellow River—within a single route. From the nomadic grasslands to the agrarian villages by the Yellow River, the journey has a very clear sense of progression and transformation.
How is this route different from a standard Inner Mongolia tour?
It places more emphasis on authentic experience and overall atmosphere than on ticking off tourist sights. Rather than glancing at the grasslands or the desert and moving on, you truly stay in the grasslands, ride across the steppe, enter the sea of sand, and then experience another northern way of life in a village above the Yellow River gorge.
Is this product good for photography?
Very much so. Horseback riding on the grasslands, grassland sunrise, campfire evenings, desert sunrise and sunset, the blue hour, the stars, the Mausoleum of Genghis Khan, the Yellow River gorge, and the village in the morning light are all highly photogenic.
What happens if the weather is bad?
In case of rain, strong wind, or other difficult conditions, outdoor elements such as the grassland campfire or desert camp activities may be moved to a more suitable setting, but we will do our best to preserve the core experiences.
Can dietary needs be discussed in advance, such as no lamb, vegetarian preferences, or allergies?
Yes. If you have vegetarian requirements, food allergies, religious dietary restrictions, or any other dietary needs, please let us know before departure and we will do our best to accommodate them.
Is this a private journey? Can it be adjusted?
Yes. This itinerary is designed primarily as a private small-group experience and can be moderately adjusted and deeply customized according to group size, pace, interests, and stamina.
What is the most reliable way to pay in Inner Mongolia?
The safest approach in Inner Mongolia is to prepare WeChat Pay, Alipay, and some cash in RMB. Only some five-star hotels accept international credit cards such as Visa, so foreign credit cards should not be your primary payment method.
